Meet the team: Katie Wigham
Q: What is your role at Archers Law?
I am an associate solicitor in the wills, probate and trusts team. I deal with drafting wills (including inheritance tax planning and planning for the possibility of being in a care home in the future), deceased’s estates, trust management and preparation and mental capacity issues, including lasting powers of attorney and deputyship applications. I also have experience in managing clients’ finances when no suitable friend or family member is available, either as their attorney or deputy.
Q: How long have you been at the firm and a little about your career journey so far.
After deciding from a young age that I would like pursue a career in law, I attended Northumbria University where I obtained my law degree. I then joined another local firm as a trainee solicitor, qualifying there in 2006 as a solicitor in their wills, probate and trusts team. It was clear from the outset that this was the area of law for me as I always enjoyed the more personal side of the law. I went on to obtain my Society for Trusts and Estate Practitioners (‘STEP’) diploma in trusts and estates in 2008 to become a fully accredited member of Solicitors for the Elderly (‘SFE’). I moved to Archers Law in 2016.
Q: What made you want to pursue a career in law?
I always believed that a career in the law would be for me as I enjoy advising, assisting and helping people. I also loved writing (originally wanted to be an author like Enid Blyton)! I have always been very organised and methodical. Being part of the wills, probate and trusts team means I can do this as part of my career and a lovely supportive team.
Q: Have you always lived in Teesside and what is your favourite thing about the Tees Valley?
Apart from my time at university and a brief spell in Hartlepool, I have always lived and worked in the Teesside area. I love the convenience of everything in our area and the supportive network of people and businesses.
Q: What do you enjoy doing in your spare time, hobbies etc?
In my spare time, I enjoy music including playing the piano, flute and baritone. I love going to the theatre with my friends and family. The past year has also enabled me to appreciate the outdoor a lot more and discover some lovely local walks.
Q: One fact/ thing people may not know about you!
Having a 5 year old has meant I now have a vast knowledge of dinosaurs!
